Welcome to the Pandas’ Class Page

Year 2 have been making ‘arrays’ to represent ‘times tables’ and ‘grouping’ into buildings and boats for our ‘City’ display.

We are a Year 2 class. Our teacher is Mrs Edmonds and our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Andrews (Monday to Wednesdays), Mrs Stratford (mornings) and Mrs Hill (Thursdays).

We are using ‘bar modelling’ to calculate multiplication and division sums.






Pandas are using empty number lines to add and subtract numbers. Useful for bridging multiples of 10 too!









This week’s news:

In English we will continue to look at traditional tales, in particular the ‘Little Red Hen.’ We will be comparing different versions of the story and beginning to think about planning our own story based on the same structure.

In Maths we are continuing to use bar modelling to help solve division questions and problems (see photo above). We are learning all about shape this week.

Our topic this term is the Great Fire of London, we are looking at Samuel Pepys and will be having a day dedicated to the GFOL this Wednesday.

This term in Pandas:

English: We will learn the story of The Little Red Hen and then use this story structure to write our own versions of this traditional tale. We will be following the Letters & Sounds programme for our phonics learning and No-Nonsense Spelling for our grammar, punctuation and spelling learning.

Maths: We will learn how to use the bar modelling strategy to answer division questions and problems. We will then work on our recall of multiplication and division facts linked to 2, 5 and 10. Later on in the term we will begin our ‘Statistics’ learning. We will create our own tally charts, pictograms and bar charts. We will be learning all about 2D and 3D shapes.

Science: Our topic for this term is Materials. We will learn to identify and compare the uses of a variety of everyday materials and find out how the shape of solid objects made from some materials can be changed.

RE: We are learning about leaders and teachers from a variety of religions, We will talk about how stories of religious leaders are important for all religions.

PSHE: Our Jigsaw topic this term is ‘Celebrating Difference. ‘

History: We will be learning about The Great Fire of London. We will talk about how and why the fire started and key historical people that made a difference.

DT: We will be researching photo frames and then making our own.

Music: We will be beginning to learn how to play the recorder.

PE: Our PE topic this term is street dance.

Computing: Our learning this term is based around programming. We will learn how to use the program ‘Scratch.’

Home Learning: In Year 2, Home Learning books need to be handed into class by Wednesday and is set on a Thursday. If one week your child does not have home learning set it is expected that they will complete tasks from the ‘on-going list’ which is on the home learning policy.

Reading Books – Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.

Maths Passports (small plastic folders) – These will be checked by Mrs Mills every other Monday.

Home Maths Packs – for named children only (larger plastic folders) – Please hand back in on Wednesdays. Mrs Andrews will put together worksheets to mirror the maths learning from that week. Please let us know if you have any questions or need support with this.

There are quite a few apps (Squeebles) and websites (Teaching Tables) you can also try out.

Home Handwriting books – for named children only – Please hand in on Mondays.

Ongoing (daily):

  • Listening to adults read stories                      
  • Reading (from reading book and other books/own literature – we recommend no more than 10 or 15 minutes). Please record and sign the ‘Reading Record’
  • Reading and spelling from word cards
  • Practise reading and spelling year 2 common exception words
  • Bug Club (once allocated)
  • Mathletics (once allocated)
